Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 19.3 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 21.6 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 28.5 × 25.4 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Vermeer's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 72.5 × 64.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Ah, Vermeer's "The Concert," a symphony in paint. This 17th-century masterpiece, completed around 1665-66, encapsulates the serene domesticity and subtle interplay of light and texture that are hallmarks of Vermeer's genius. Set in a tranquil interior, the scene unfolds with three figures absorbed in musical communion.

On the left, a young woman, resplendent in a yellow jacket trimmed with ermine, plays a virginal. Her posture is graceful, her concentration palpable. Opposite her, a man, shrouded in a rich brown cloak, plucks the strings of a lute, his back turned to the viewer, adding a touch of mystery. Standing beside the virginal, a second woman, in a blue dress with white accents, holds a sheet of music, perhaps preparing to join in the performance or reflecting on the melody.

The room is bathed in soft, natural light, which pours in from an unseen window, illuminating the checkered floor tiles in a pattern of light and shadow. The light caresses the textures of the Persian rug draped over the table in the foreground, the gleaming surface of the musical instruments, and the refined fabrics of the figures' clothing.

Above the musicians, two paintings hang on the wall, their dark, earthy tones contrasting with the lighter hues of the scene. These artworks within the artwork echo themes of music and contemplation, enhancing the sense of an intellectual and artistic haven.

Vermeer's meticulous attention to detail, from the delicate curls of the woman's hair to the intricate designs on the lute and virginal, invites viewers into this intimate moment of shared artistic pursuit. "The Concert" is not merely a depiction of a musical gathering; it is a testament to the harmony of human interaction and the transcendent power of art.
