Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.4 × 17.3 in print therefore arrives as 23.7 × 19.7 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 24 × 19.5 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Vermeer's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 54.3 × 44 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Netherlands. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Brick accumulates meaning here. Each weathered surface in Johannes Vermeer's The Little Street carries the weight of daily existence, rendered with such material conviction that one might reach out to test its roughness. Against pale mortar, the red ochre walls create a rhythm of domesticity—house, passageway, house again—punctuated by those signature green shutters that speak of Dutch propriety.

Vermeer constructs his scene with architectural precision. Two women occupy this quiet Vlamingstraat corner: one bent over needlework in the passageway, another barely visible through the rightmost doorway. Children crouch on the stoep, absorbed in some game whose rules we'll never know. Above them, clouds mass in natural ultramarine and lead white, their volume suggesting the coastal dampness that seeps into Delft's bones.

Geometry governs everything. Horizontal bands of street, buildings, and sky create stability, while the stepped gables introduce diagonal movement. Notice how the artist employs impasto selectively—thicker paint gives the brickwork its tactile presence, while smoother passages suggest the worn cobblestones. This variation in surface treatment demonstrates Vermeer's material intelligence, his understanding of how paint itself can embody different textures of urban life.

Recent archival discoveries confirm this depicts the artist's own neighborhood, specifically his aunt's tripe-selling establishment. Perhaps this explains the painting's unusual intimacy—Vermeer knew these walls, had walked past that Penspoort countless times. Unlike his View of Delft with its panoramic ambitions, this work contracts to human scale. Everything exists within reach.

Azurite mixed with lead-tin-yellow creates those weathered green shutters, their color both practical and poetic. Madder lake warms the brickwork. Such limited means, yet how completely they evoke a particular quality of northern light, that gray illumination that flattens shadows and reveals surface. One can almost smell the canal water flowing just beyond the frame, hear the scrape of wooden shoes on stone.

Time moves differently here. Where contemporary Pieter de Hooch might populate similar courtyards with anecdotal activity, Vermeer reduces human presence to essentials. His figures exist not as narrative but as compositional weights, dark forms anchoring the light architecture. They belong to these walls as naturally as the mortar between bricks.

Standing before this painting in Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, viewers often search for drama that isn't there. Vermeer offers something rarer: the radical dignity of the everyday, painted with such material honesty that it transcends its Dutch Golden Age origins. Contemporary eyes, accustomed to spectacle, must adjust to this quieter frequency. Here waits proof that profundity needs no grand gestures—only acute attention to the texture of lived experience, the weight of walls that shelter ordinary life.
