Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 18.8 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 21.1 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41 × 47.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Vermeer's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 67.7 × 79.6 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Germany. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Within a domestic interior suffused with cool northern light, a young woman in coral-red satin tilts back a wine glass, pressing it to her face to drain the last drops. Her gesture suggests both eagerness and avoidance—the urgency of her drinking perhaps a defense against the watchful presence of her companion. The gentleman, cloaked in olive drapery and crowned with a broad-brimmed hat, hovers expectantly, wine jug poised in hand, ready to refill her empty vessel. Between them lies an unspoken tension, delicately balanced between propriety and something more ambiguous.
The palette reveals Vermeer's extraordinary sensitivity to light and material. The woman's dress blazes against the muted grays and browns of the interior, its coral tones echoed subtly in the Turkish carpet's ornamental border. Cool daylight, filtered through leaded glass, transforms every surface it touches—the lustrous sheen of satin, the dull warmth of wood, the geometric precision of the tiled floor. This restrained chromatic vocabulary heightens the drama of the central red form, making the woman both the visual and psychological focus of the composition.
Vermeer's technique demonstrates his evolution toward a more refined illusionism. Each texture receives distinct treatment—from the loose, confident strokes defining the carpet's pattern to the careful modulation of light across the woman's white headdress. The paint handling achieves a balance between descriptive precision and painterly atmosphere, never descending into mere surface description. This measured approach extends to the rendering of space itself, where perspective and light collaborate to create an utterly convincing interior.
The composition marks a significant departure in Vermeer's spatial conception. The empty chair in the foreground establishes a barrier between viewer and scene, creating psychological distance that amplifies the painting's voyeuristic undertones. This calculated withdrawal allows the architectural elements—the window, the picture frame, the furniture—to assert themselves as equal participants in the narrative. The stained glass window, bearing an emblematic figure of Temperance with her bridle, provides an ironic commentary on the scene's potential for excess.
This work reveals Vermeer absorbing and transforming the innovations of contemporaries like Gerard ter Borch and Pieter de Hooch. While ter Borch provided the theme of monitored drinking, and de Hooch the architectural framework, Vermeer synthesizes these influences into something distinctly his own. The result transcends genre painting's typical moralizing to achieve a suspended moment of psychological complexity, where social ritual teeters on the edge of transgression.
