Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17.1 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.5 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 29.9 × 23.7 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Matisse's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 100.5 × 80 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Pinacoteca Agnelli, Turin, Italy. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Here, within the confines of a Nice apartment, Matisse orchestrates a symphony of domestic intimacy and decorative exuberance. The scene presents itself as a carefully choreographed tableau: a striped table cloth in bold red and white diagonal stripes anchors the foreground, upon which rests a green tray bearing the golden orb of a pineapple, scattered citrus fruits, and a glass vase of delicate blooms. The phonograph, that modern intrusion referenced in the title, remains curiously absent from immediate view, suggesting perhaps its presence beyond the frame or as a metaphorical allusion to the harmonies within.

The chromatic relationships reveal Matisse's mastery of color as both structure and sensation. The vermillion and white stripes create a dynamic foundation that propels the eye upward through warm ochres and cool turquoise passages. A particularly striking note emerges in the juxtaposition of the coral-red patterned rug visible through the window's frame against the pale lavender curtain and golden drapery. These color zones function not merely as description but as emotional registers - the warmth of the Mediterranean light suffusing every surface with its particular radiance.

Matisse's brush moves with assured fluidity, building form through color rather than line. The paint application varies from the relatively smooth rendering of the fruit to the more gestural treatment of the textile patterns and architectural elements. This variation in touch creates a rhythm across the surface, where areas of rest alternate with passages of decorative intensity. The artist's hand remains visible yet controlled, each mark contributing to the overall orchestration without calling undue attention to itself.

The spatial construction defies conventional perspective, embracing instead a flattened pictorial logic that allows multiple viewpoints to coexist. The tilted tabletop presents its cargo frontally while the room recedes at conflicting angles. Through the window, another room appears - or perhaps a reflection - creating a mise en abyme that complicates our reading of interior and exterior space. This ambiguity extends to the mirror mentioned in the historical record, where Matisse's own presence hovers ghostlike, a subtle signature within the work.

The decorative elements - the patterned textiles, the ornate rug, the painted borders - speak to Matisse's absorption of North African and Andalusian influences, transformed through his particular vision into something neither Oriental pastiche nor Western domesticity but a third space entirely. This Nice period work demonstrates how the artist synthesized his travels and experiences into a visual language that transcends mere representation, creating instead a meditation on color, pattern, and the sensual pleasures of inhabited space.
