Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.6 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 31.5 × 24.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Matisse's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 116 × 89 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Pinacoteca Agnelli, Turin, Italy. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The interior of Matisse's Vence studio materialises before us in this late work, where a figure in red sits amidst an arrangement of plum blossoms and citrus fruits. The seated person, rendered with characteristic economy, wears a crimson garment and holds what appears to be a bouquet of flowers. Behind, branches bearing delicate pink blossoms emerge from a pale vessel, while the window frames reveal glimpses of blue sky punctuated by more flowering branches. Yellow lemons or oranges rest in a blue dish on the vibrant red table, their forms simplified to essential shapes.

The chromatic relationships here demonstrate Matisse's evolved understanding of colour as an autonomous force. The dominant triad of red, green, and blue creates a visual tension that energises the entire surface. That expansive red table pushes forward assertively, while the mint-green wall, decorated with loose black marks suggesting foliage patterns, provides a cooling counterpoint. The blues - appearing in window frames, fruit bowl, and sky glimpses - act as spatial anchors, creating depth within this otherwise flattened pictorial space.

The brushwork reveals a deliberate looseness, with paint applied in broad, confident strokes that leave visible traces of the artist's hand. This gestural quality, particularly evident in the background's decorative marks and the figure's simplified features, points towards the papier découpé technique that would soon dominate Matisse's practice. The paint handling suggests speed and spontaneity, yet the overall composition remains carefully orchestrated.

Spatially, the painting operates on multiple levels of representation. The flattened perspective compresses foreground and background into a unified decorative surface, while the window frames create a picture-within-picture effect. This compositional strategy - the interplay between interior and exterior space - had occupied Matisse throughout his career, but here achieves a particularly synthetic resolution.

Created during his final years working primarily in paint at Vence, this canvas belongs to a series of seven large-format studio interiors from 1947-48. The work represents a significant step towards pure abstraction, as evidenced by the existence of a companion piece at MoMA, "Branche de prunier, fond ocre," which differs only in its colour relationships. This systematic exploration of chromatic variations confirms Matisse's assertion about the "magic of colour relationships" - here, representation serves merely as a framework for investigating colour's expressive potential. The painting thus stands as both a summation of past concerns and a bridge to the revolutionary cut-outs that would define his final creative phase.
