Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 17.3 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 19.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 40.9 × 51.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Johann Liss's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 133.3 × 167.4 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery of Art, Washington, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Steam seems to curl invisibly from that shallow bowl at the center of the table, and everything in the picture pivots on it. The peasant leans in, spoon lifted, lips pursed to cool his soup. Across from him, the satyr recoils, mouth open in mid-shout, one horned brow raised in theatrical disbelief. Between them, held aloft by a woman whose smile is warm but bemused, a plump child stares directly out at us, as though inviting witness to the absurdity unfolding below.

This is Aesop, freshly staged. Johann Liss picks the exact instant of rupture in the fable of the man and the satyr - the moment the demigod realizes his mortal guest blows hot on cold fingers and cool on hot broth, and decides that such inconsistency disqualifies humanity from friendship. The moral hangs in the air like the soup's rising heat.

What astonishes here is the physical weight of the paint. The peasant's white sleeve, bunched at the elbow, is built up in thick, kneaded strokes of lead white shadowed with grey and cool umber - fabric you could almost hear rustle. The satyr's torso, by contrast, glows in warm ochre and rose, sculpted with long sweeping strokes that follow the muscle. Liss learned this fleshy, kinetic vocabulary from Rubens and Jordaens during his years in Antwerp, and it shows in every bulging forearm and twisted shoulder. Yet the deep gloom pressing in from the edges, and the raking light that carves the satyr's ribs, remember Caravaggio too. Venice hums underneath the whole thing - the russet, gold, and mossy green owe a real debt to Veronese and late Titian.

Look at the composition's engine: two diagonals crossing over the bowl. The satyr's outstretched arm drives one way, the peasant's hunched back the other, and the child's pale bundle plants a vertical axis right where they meet. It is a baroque hinge, wound tight.

One detail rewards patience. Along the satyr's flank, ivy leaves twine through the shaggy fur of his haunches - a small botanical flourish that reminds us he belongs to the woods, not the smoky kitchen he has wandered into. Perhaps this is why Liss lets the shadows swallow the room's corners: the satyr's world is already withdrawing.

Standing before The Satyr and the Peasant at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, one feels the near-comic energy of an argument caught at its peak - voices raised, breath visible, a spoon suspended. Liss died young, barely into his thirties, and paintings like this one make the loss sting. Few artists of the early seventeenth century could make a moral fable feel this alive, this loud, this human.
