Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17.5 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.8 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 51.2 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Johann Liss's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 128.5 × 99 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Blood catches the light before anything else does. It falls in thick, glossy ribbons from the severed neck of Holofernes, so viscous you can almost smell the iron of it, pooling against the dulled sheen of his armour at the picture's lower edge. Only then do you register what has just happened – and who is watching you watch it.

Judith turns her head toward us with a look that is neither triumphant nor troubled. It is something stranger: composed, warm-cheeked, faintly damp with the effort of what she has done. Her turban, wound in ivory silk shot through with coral pink, has slipped just enough to release a curl of hair that spirals down against her neck. That single tendril is the detail I keep returning to. It carries more erotic charge than any bared shoulder, and Johann Liss knew it.

Behind her, half-swallowed by shadow, the maidservant opens the sack. The white of Holofernes' upturned eye glimmers for an instant – a flash of dead astonishment. His body sprawls in the foreground, muscular, undignified, the golden-yellow of his skin echoed by the heavy satin drapery cascading across the bed. That gold is the picture's warmest note, and it belongs to the corpse.

Liss orchestrates the whole scene as a circle. Your eye travels up the diagonal of Holofernes' back, through the loose white chemise falling from Judith's shoulder, across the three faces stacked in the upper register, then down again through the teal-green sash at her waist, the tumble of ochre silk, and back to the wound. Nothing escapes the loop. It is a closed system of guilt and glamour.

The Caravaggesque debt is obvious – Liss was in Rome in the 1620s, and the tenebrist drama, the cropped intimacy, the refusal to prettify violence all descend from that encounter. Yet the handling feels distinctly Northern. Born in Holstein and trained through the Netherlands before heading south, Liss painted flesh with a Flemish tenderness Caravaggio never allowed himself. Look at how the sleeve balloons in creamy, almost meringue-like folds, mirroring the swell of Holofernes' shoulder muscle just beneath. Feminine artifice and masculine bulk rhyme visually, and the woman wins.

What lingers, standing in front of this canvas at the National Gallery in London, is the peculiar warmth of it. Judith in the Tent of Holofernes should be repellent. Instead it seduces – flushed skin, glossy lips, the whisper of silk against sweat – and only afterwards, perhaps in the corridor outside, do you remember the head in the sack. That delayed shudder is the whole point.
