Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 14.2 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 31 × 47.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of George Inness's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 76.8 × 114.3 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A small orange sun hangs low on the left, barely stronger than the haze around it. It gives off almost no light. Instead it sits in the pale gray sky like a coal seen through smoke, and the whole meadow below seems to hold its breath in that muted warmth. Is it morning or evening? Inness leaves the question open, and the uncertainty is part of the pleasure.

The scene itself is simple. A strip of still water in the foreground reflects the silvery sky, a broad field of yellow-green grass runs back toward a line of trees, and two slender saplings rise in the middle distance, their thin leaves dissolving into the air. On the right a dense mass of foliage in olive, moss and rust closes the view. Here and there tiny accents break the calm: a pale glint among the dark leaves, a faint yellow patch that might be a sunlit house behind the trees, dry stalks at the water's edge. Nothing is spelled out.

That softness is deliberate, and it comes from how the paint went on. George Inness laid down his colors with a brush and then rubbed into them with a cloth, so that greens slide into ochres and grays without a single hard edge. Look at where the trees meet the sky: there is no outline, only a gradual thickening of tone, as if the leaves were condensing out of mist. The surface has a worn, almost breathed-on quality, especially in the sky, where the canvas texture shows through the thin, scraped paint.

The title points to Montclair, New Jersey, where Inness lived in his later years, and the view may well be a real one. But he cared little about making a place recognizable. A follower of the Swedish mystic Emanuel Swedenborg, he was convinced that the divine runs through all of nature, and he wanted his landscapes to carry that unseen presence rather than a catalog of particulars. Seen this way, the blurring is not vagueness but a kind of attention: to the air between things, to the way color itself can feel alive.

In Summer, Montclair (New Jersey Landscape), now at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, the result is a picture that rewards slow looking. The longer you stay with it, the more the greens separate into dozens of quiet shades, and the more that small sun seems to warm the entire canvas from within.

It is the kind of summer day you remember rather than see, when the heat has not yet burned off the mist, and the world is still soft at the edges.
