Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 14.4 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.8 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 27.5 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of George Inness's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 76.7 × 114.3 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The twilight hour transforms Inness's Montclair property into a realm of atmospheric suggestion, where the certainties of day dissolve into the ambiguities of approaching night. Snow blankets the New Jersey landscape, its surface rendered not as pristine white but as a receptive ground for reflected light and shadow. A solitary house nestles in the middle distance, its chimney releasing a wisp of smoke that merges almost imperceptibly with the amber-gold sky. To the left, a dark evergreen provides the composition's sole vertical accent, while bare deciduous trees scatter across the horizon like calligraphic marks against the luminous atmosphere. In the foreground, fence posts emerge from the snow, their forms partially dissolved, creating a rhythmic progression that leads the eye into the picture's depths.

The color orchestration reveals Inness at his most subtle. The sky shifts from deep amber at the horizon to a more diffused golden-gray above, suggesting that liminal moment when day surrenders to evening. This warm celestial glow suffuses the entire canvas, tempering even the cool whites and pale blues of the snow. Touches of russet and brown - visible in the dried grasses breaking through the snow's surface and in the weathered fence posts - provide earthy notes that ground the composition in material reality while participating in the overall tonal harmony.

Inness's technique here demonstrates his mature practice of building atmosphere through successive veils of thinly applied paint. The surface breathes; nothing is overwrought or labored. His brushwork varies from the barely perceptible blending in the sky to more gestural touches suggesting vegetation. This method allows forms to emerge and recede, creating that quality of visual uncertainty so characteristic of twilight perception. The painting surface itself becomes a metaphor for the transient moment captured - neither fully resolved nor entirely dissolved.

Compositionally, Inness employs a deceptively simple horizontal structure, the landscape bands receding in parallel planes. Yet within this framework, subtle diagonals - the fence line, the smoke's drift, the lean of bare trees - create gentle tensions that animate the scene. The dark evergreen functions as an anchoring element, preventing the eye from drifting entirely into the atmospheric distances. This careful balance between structure and dissolution, between the tangible and the ephemeral, places the work firmly within the Tonalist movement's aesthetic concerns, where mood supersedes topographical accuracy, and spiritual essence takes precedence over material description.
