Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 20 × 12 in print therefore arrives as 22.4 × 14.4 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 33.9 × 20.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Martin Johnson Heade's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 50.8 × 30.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Humid air seems to hang between the passionflower vines, that particular weight of Amazonian atmosphere where moisture and light become almost tangible substances. Martin Johnson Heade positions a single black-eared fairy (Heliothryx aurita) at the painting's heart, its emerald throat catching light that filters through the canopy. Vermillion passionflowers burst against olive-green foliage, their corona filaments radiating outward like minute fireworks frozen mid-explosion. Each bloom appears at a different stage—one fully opened, another tilting downward, several in various degrees of unfurling.
Heade's brush deposits color with almost scientific precision. Notice how he builds the bird's plumage through minute, directional strokes, each feather distinct yet part of a cohesive whole. The passionflowers receive different treatment entirely. Here, the paint flows more liquidly, petals rendered in confident sweeps of cadmium red deepening to carmine at their bases. Moss accumulates on the lower branches through stippled touches of raw umber and yellow ochre, creating that particular sponginess of rainforest growth. Perhaps most intriguing is his handling of the background—layers of gray-blue glazes suggest both distance and the perpetual mist of lowland forest.
Vertical elements dominate. Serpentine vines climb upward, their tendrils spiraling in opposing directions, while Spanish moss drapes downward from the weathered branch above. Between these opposing movements, the hummingbird hovers in perfect equilibrium, beak poised toward the nearest flower. This compositional tension reflects something deeper—the delicate interdependence Heade observed between species. One might imagine the barely audible whir of wings, the sticky sweetness of nectar in tropical heat.
The painting belongs to that curious period between 1875 and 1885 when Heade, having absorbed Darwin's writings on natural selection, began depicting ecological relationships with new intensity. Unlike his earlier Brazilian forest scenes, this work from the Metropolitan Museum of Art presents nature as an intricate system rather than mere backdrop. Compare it to his "Orchids and Spray Orchids with Hummingbirds" where similar themes emerge through different flora.
Color temperature shifts dramatically from warm foreground to cool recession. Burnt sienna in the twisted branches gradually dissolves into pearl gray atmosphere. The hummingbird's white breast provides the single point of pure light, a focal anchor that prevents the eye from wandering too far into the forest depths. Contemporary viewers might recognize in this careful observation of species interaction an early ecological consciousness, that same attention to systemic relationships that preoccupies us today. Heade understood what we're still learning—that beauty and function in nature remain inseparable, each crimson flower shaped by and shaping the creature that feeds from it.
