Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17.1 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.5 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 47.2 × 37.4 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Georges de La Tour's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 117 × 91.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Los Angeles County Museum of Art, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A single candle does all the work in this room – and what extraordinary work it does. In Georges de La Tour's Magdalen with the Smoking Flame, a thin wisp of smoke curls upward from the wick, barely visible against the warm umber darkness, while the flame itself hides behind a stack of leather-bound books. We never see the fire directly. Instead, we see what it touches: the pale curve of a woman's cheek, the soft hollow of her throat, the gleaming dome of a skull resting in her lap.

Mary Magdalen sits in near-total darkness, her chin propped on one hand, her gaze fixed on the hidden flame. She is young here – not the aged penitent of older traditions, but a woman caught mid-thought, her body still, her breathing almost audible in the silence. A rope belt cinches her waist. Her blouse, white and finely wrinkled, catches the light differently from the heavier fabric of her skirt, which absorbs it. Tour's attention to these surface distinctions is extraordinary: the skull gleams with a polished mineral hardness, the book spines reflect a duller, warmer sheen, and the flesh of Mary's hands and face holds light the way living skin actually does – softly, unevenly, with warmth underneath.

The composition is deceptively simple. Vertical and horizontal lines dominate – the upright figure, the flat edge of the table, the stacked books – creating a geometric calm that reinforces the meditative mood. A knotted scourge sits coiled among the books, easy to miss but quietly insistent, a reminder of penance and physical suffering tucked into this otherwise serene arrangement. Below her lap, her bare feet and legs emerge from shadow, grounding her in the physical world even as her mind drifts elsewhere.

Georges de La Tour spent his career in Lorraine, far from Paris and Rome, yet his handling of candlelight rivals anything Caravaggio's followers achieved. Where Caravaggio's tenebrism tends toward drama and violence, Tour's darkness feels inhabited, even tender. The flame here is not theatrical. It is devotional – what the mystic St. John of the Cross called "the living flame of love," a spiritual beacon burning in the dark night of the soul. Perhaps that is why the candle smokes rather than blazes. The faith it represents is quiet, persistent, not ecstatic.

One detail rewards slow looking. The reflection of the flame appears as a tiny bright point on the skull's forehead, a small kiss of light on bone. Life illuminating death, or death warmed by contemplation – either reading works. The entire painting operates in this register: not telling a story so much as holding a mood, the way a cupped hand holds a candle flame against the wind.

Stand before this canvas at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and you may notice something else – the room around you seems to quiet down. Few paintings so effectively create the sensation of hush, of air thickened by thought and stillness, of time not stopped but deliberately, gratefully slowed.
