1757-1827

British Painter

William Blake (1757-1827) was an English painter, poet, and printmaker who is now considered one of the most important figures in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. Born in London on November 28, 1757, Blake was largely unrecognized during his lifetime but has since been regarded as a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic era.

Blake began his artistic career at a young age, apprenticing as an engraver under James Basire at the age of 14. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Arts, where he developed his unique style that combined elements of Gothic art, Neoclassicism, and Romanticism. Blake's work was characterized by its visionary and imaginative qualities, often exploring themes of spirituality, mysticism, and the human condition.

In addition to his painting and engraving work, Blake was also a prolific poet. His most famous works include "Songs of Innocence" (1789) and "Songs of Experience" (1794), which were published together as "Songs of Innocence and of Experience" in 1794. These collections of poems were accompanied by Blake's own illustrations, showcasing his talents as both a visual artist and a writer.

Throughout his career, Blake faced financial difficulties and struggled to gain recognition for his work. His unconventional style and subject matter often alienated him from the mainstream art world, and he was largely dismissed by his contemporaries. However, his work has since been celebrated for its innovative approach to art and its exploration of complex themes that continue to resonate with audiences today.

William Blake was a visionary artist and poet whose work has had a lasting impact on the worlds of art and literature. His unique style and exploration of themes such as spirituality, mysticism, and the human condition have made him a seminal figure in the Romantic era and beyond.
