Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16.6 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 19 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 27.5 × 35.8 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Waterhouse's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 153 × 200 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Tate Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Copper hair unfurls against white linen—the Lady releases her mooring chain. Her fingers uncurl slowly, deliberately. She knows what comes next. The black boat cradles not just a woman but an entire medieval world: that tapestry tumbling over the side bears lances and shields, worked in madder red and saffron yellow. Three candles sputter. A crucifix tilts forward like a ship's figurehead.

Waterhouse gives us the aftermath, not the crisis. No tower, no cursed mirror—just a woman in a boat, moving toward death. The whole painting leans rightward. Watch how the bulrushes bend, how the current tugs at trailing fabric, how even those lily pads spin clockwise in the wash. This diagonal pull creates momentum that fights against our desire to linger on details.

The artist painted this during his Somerset summers, working outdoors in natural light. You can see it in how shadow pools beneath the willows—that particular green-black only achievable by mixing viridian with raw umber while squinting at real trees. Sky breaks through in fragments of cobalt. But look closer at the reeds: Waterhouse has scratched through wet paint with his palette knife, exposing the canvas beneath. This aggressive mark-making contradicts the scene's apparent serenity.

The tapestry tells its own story. All that Byzantine splendor—vermillion threads catching light, gold-wrapped silk—belongs to the world she's leaving. Her dress, by contrast, could be a shroud. When set beside Millais's drowned Ophelia (painted thirty-six years earlier), differences emerge. Ophelia dissolves into nature; flowers claim her. The Lady of Shalott remains upright, eyes fixed on something beyond the frame. She's not drowning—she's navigating.

This canvas launched Waterhouse's Tennyson obsession. The Tate Britain owns this first attempt; Leeds got the 1894 sequel. He'd sketch the subject compulsively in margins, on envelopes, anywhere. Each study pushed deeper into the question Tennyson posed: what happens when artistic isolation meets desire? Victorian audiences read it as tragedy. We might see it differently—as a woman choosing the real world over reflection, whatever the cost.

Short strokes build the water's surface. Long ones pull the eye downstream. Waterhouse understood something about rivers and fate that pure studio painters miss. Stand before the original and you'll smell the mud, feel the boat's gentle rock. The chain keeps slipping. Camelot remains a rumor on the horizon.
