Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 14.7 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 17.1 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 35.4 × 24.1 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Waterhouse's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 183 × 127 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Tate Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Waterhouse presents us with a solitary figure engaged in ritual practice, a young woman of indeterminate cultural origin who commands our attention through both her actions and her arresting presence. Barefoot within a circle she inscribes with her wand, she stands before a smoking cauldron, her left hand grasping a crescent sickle. Her costume speaks of cultural eclecticism—the pale blue gown adorned with what appear to be Persian or Greek warrior motifs, her dark hair arranged in a manner suggesting Anglo-Saxon influence. The setting is deliberately ambiguous: crumbling architecture hints at ancient civilizations, while the barren landscape stretches into an atmospheric haze.
The palette operates through calculated contrasts. Against the predominant earth tones—umbers, siennas, and ochres that dominate the desolate landscape—the cerulean of the protagonist's dress creates an almost shocking point of focus. This chromatic isolation reinforces her otherworldly status. The artist employs subtle gradations in the background, where architectural ruins dissolve into atmospheric perspective, while maintaining sharp definition in the foreground elements. The smoke rising from the cauldron provides a vertical element that connects earth to sky through translucent veils of grey and white.
Waterhouse's technique reveals his academic training modified by Pre-Raphaelite influences. The paint handling combines precise detail in the figure—note the careful rendering of fabric folds and decorative elements—with broader, more suggestive brushwork in the landscape. This hierarchical approach to finish directs our reading of the image, emphasizing the human drama over environmental context.
Compositionally, the work employs a series of concentric zones. The magic circle itself establishes the primary boundary, reinforced by the distribution of symbolic elements—corvids and amphibians relegated to the exterior wasteland, while flowering plants occupy the protected interior space. The vertical thrust of smoke creates a central axis, anchoring the figure while suggesting communication between terrestrial and celestial realms.
This early work demonstrates Waterhouse's developing fascination with feminine mystical power, a theme he would pursue throughout his career. Created during a period when Victorian audiences displayed considerable appetite for orientalist fantasy, the painting synthesizes multiple cultural references without committing to specific geographical or temporal coordinates. The deliberate ambiguity of meaning—is she priestess, witch, or prophet?—enhanced rather than diminished its contemporary appeal, allowing viewers to project their own narratives onto this enigmatic scene.
