About the Painting

"The Smoker" (1888) by Vincent van Gogh is a remarkable portrait that captures the rugged simplicity of rural life. Painted during Van Gogh’s time in Arles, this depiction of a local farmworker offers a vivid glimpse into the painter's admiration for the working class. The man, with his weathered face and ruddy cheeks, seems to embody the outdoors. His unkempt mustache and slightly pursed lips, which grip the pipe, show a man entirely at ease in his skin, content in his routine. Van Gogh’s characteristic loose and expressive brushstrokes enhance the authenticity of this depiction.

The muted palette of browns, greens, and blues conveys a somber yet earthy tone that suits the sitter’s humble attire. His jacket, rendered with thick, almost muddy strokes, feels worn. Van Gogh doesn’t polish his subject but instead emphasizes the texture of lived experience, showing the coat as frayed and practical rather than ornamental.

Interestingly, the artist manages to combine near abstraction with detailed realism.
