Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13.9 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.2 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 22.7 × 35.4 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Joseph Tissot's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 72.5 × 118 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Wakefield Art Gallery, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Three champagne bottles lie tucked beside a wicker hamper at the bottom edge of the picture, their foil necks catching a little light, and the trip already has its mood. Above them, on the latticed deck of a small launch, a red-bearded man in a navy coat and white trousers lounges with a cigar at his lips, his slippered feet stretched across a fur rug. Two young women share the cushions with him, each sheltering under a black umbrella, one wrapped in a red and black plaid shawl, the other half sunk into a froth of pale blue skirts. A pug peers out from between them, and a black-and-tan dog sleeps heavily across the man's shins.

Nobody is talking. The man gazes off to the left, the woman in blue looks the other way, and the one in plaid watches him with an expression that is hard to pin down. Joseph Tissot loved this kind of social puzzle, a scene that seems perfectly polite and yet leaves you wondering what the relationships are. When The Thames appeared at the Royal Academy in 1876, critics thought they knew. A gentleman alone with two ladies, no chaperone, wine in the basket: some reviewers called the subject coarse and deliberately vulgar and suspected a hint of prostitution. Part of that outrage may have had less to do with the picture than with its painter, a Frenchman working in London at a time of strong suspicion toward his countrymen.

Look past the passengers and a very different story fills the canvas. The river is crowded with tall-masted sailing ships, their rigging drawn in a fine gray web against the sky, while steamers with red funnels pour thick black smoke into the air. A Union Jack snaps at the stern of the launch and a red ensign hangs from the big hull behind it. The water itself is a churned olive-brown, laid in with short, choppy strokes that make the boat feel genuinely in motion.

All that smoke is not just weather. The painting belonged to Kaye Knowles, who very likely commissioned it, and whose fortune came from the Lancashire coal mines his grandfather had built up. Tissot filled the background with the business of coal: a gasworks, freight barges, the coal-fired steamships and the working river that carried British industry. The black umbrellas start to make sense against a sky where soot might fall as readily as rain.

So the picture holds two worlds in one frame. Up front, wool, fur, silk and idle pleasure; behind, the grimy machinery that paid for it. The sleeping dog, sprawled in the most comfortable spot on board, may be the only one who isn't thinking about either.
