Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 18.3 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 30.5 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Valentin Serov's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 181.5 × 133 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Perched on the edge of a floral settee, Princess Zinaida Yusupova meets us with an expression that is neither guarded nor performative – simply present. Her white gown pools around her in loose, painterly cascades, brushed on with such fluidity that whole passages of the skirt seem to have been laid down in a single afternoon. The green bodice, deep as bottle glass, anchors the figure. Without it, the whole picture might dissolve into pinks and creams.

Valentin Serov clearly relished the contradictions here. Zinaida was among the wealthiest women in the Russian Empire, mistress of Arkhangelskoye and its legendary collections, yet the portrait refuses grandeur. No ermine, no coronet, no theatrical column behind her. Just a black velvet ribbon at the throat, pearl drops at the ears, and a small white Pomeranian pressed watchfully against her side. That little dog, painted with quick flicks of ivory and grey, is one of the picture's quiet triumphs – alert where its mistress is composed, faintly comic, entirely alive.

Look at the wall behind. A cluster of gilt-framed cabinet pictures floats against pale plaster, each frame suggested rather than described, gold scumbled over in loose calligraphic strokes. Serov trusts us to read them as paintings without insisting on their subjects. The larger frame at upper left, glimpsed at an angle, tips the room into a real three-dimensional space, though depth is otherwise handled with the lightest possible touch. One might imagine the faint scent of beeswax polish and cut flowers, the hush particular to a great house in mid-afternoon.

The palette is what lingers. Rose, oyster, ash-grey, warm gold, with those two decisive darks – the bodice and the choker – holding everything in place. It recalls what Sargent was doing in London and Paris in the same years, though Serov's touch is drier, less flamboyant, more searching. There is no swagger. The face is modelled with real care, the cheeks flushed, the eyes slightly amused, as if she has just been told something she half believes.

Serov reportedly found the princess exceptionally charming, quick-witted and free of aristocratic affectation, and one senses that affection in every decision. The Portrait of Princess Zinaida Yusupova, completed in 1902 and now at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, belongs to a small group of Yusupov family portraits from these years. Of them all, this is the one that feels most like a conversation caught mid-sentence.

Within two decades her world would be gone. Standing before the canvas now, knowing what came after, the lightness of her expression carries a weight Serov could not have intended – and yet somehow anticipated.
