Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17.2 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.5 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 32.8 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Sassoferrato's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 73 × 57.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Her eyes are nearly closed, her head tilted just enough to catch the light along the bridge of her nose and the curve of her cheek. Hands meet in prayer at the centre of the canvas, fingertips touching, palms pressed lightly together. Around her, Sassoferrato has built an entire emotional world from three colours: ultramarine blue, ivory white, and a deep coral red that surfaces only at the cuffs, the bodice, and a single dramatic fold tumbling down the front of her robe.

That blue does extraordinary work. Mined from lapis lazuli quarried in the mountains of north-eastern Afghanistan, ultramarine was the costliest pigment a seventeenth-century painter could lay on a panel, and here it earns every scudo. Against the warm black of the background, the cloak seems lit from within, almost humming. The white veil falls in heavy, sculpted folds across her shoulders and chest, and the painter handles it with such restraint that you can sense the weight of the linen, its coolness against skin.

Look closely at the join between her thumbs and the edge of the veil. There is a tiny passage where the cream fabric meets the pink flush of her hands, and the transition is managed without a visible brushmark – just one tone melting into the next. This is the inheritance of Raphael, whom Giovanni Battista Salvi (the painter's given name; Sassoferrato comes from his Marches birthplace) studied with the devotion of a much later admirer. He was working around 1640 to 1650, deep in the Roman Baroque, yet he turned his back on the theatrics of his contemporaries. No swirling angels, no parted clouds. Guido Reni's softness is in the air, perhaps, but the spirit belongs to an earlier, quieter century.

What strikes me, standing in front of this picture in the National Gallery in London, is how the dark background refuses to behave like a wall. It feels less like enclosure than like hush – the kind of silence you find in a side chapel when the main service has emptied out. Mary is alone with her thoughts, and we have been allowed, almost by accident, into the same pool of stillness.

Sassoferrato made several variations on this theme, sometimes with the Virgin facing front, sometimes gazing upward, sometimes hooded in blue. Private collectors wanted them for bedrooms and small oratories, for the kind of personal prayer the post-Tridentine Church encouraged. That intimacy is built into the scale and the silence.

One might imagine her about to speak, or perhaps having just finished. The painting holds that suspended moment without ever resolving it, which is, in the end, why people keep returning to The Virgin in Prayer.
