Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.3 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 18.7 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 31.1 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Rachel Ruysch's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 79.5 × 60.2 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery, The Hague, Netherlands. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Against obsidian darkness, coral tulips unfurl their striped petals like silk banners. Rachel Ruysch's Vase with Flowers confronts us not with perfection, but with decay's quiet drama. Here, in the Mauritshuis collection, blooms surrender to time's passage while retaining their fierce chromatic power.

Vermillion carnations blaze beside powder-blue irises, their complementary tensions creating optical vibrations across the canvas surface. Ruysch manipulates her palette with surgical precision—warm sienas anchor the lower register while cooler viridian greens spiral upward, defying gravity's pull. Perhaps most striking is how she renders the white roses: not as pure titanium, but as cream touched with the faintest blush of umber shadows.

The central void where a wilted poppy once bloomed becomes the composition's breathing space. This deliberate absence creates recession that would challenge even contemporary installation artists. Ruysch's brushwork alternates between almost invisible glazing on the tulip petals and accumulated impasto on the rose's ruffled edges, where paint catches light like morning dew on actual petals.

Each stem follows its own trajectory—some arch leftward in graceful parabolas, others thrust diagonally across the picture plane. The eye navigates through this botanical choreography without ever finding a true center, as if Ruysch understood that nature abhors symmetry. Cascading nasturtiums at the composition's base anchor the arrangement while suggesting movement beyond the frame's boundaries.

Working within the Dutch Golden Age's tradition of symbolic still life, Ruysch inherited more than technique from her botanist father Frederik Ruysch. She absorbed his scientific precision while developing her own vocabulary of transience. Unlike her contemporary Jan van Huysum's meticulous arrangements, Ruysch embraces the imperfect—the browning petal edges, the drooping stems that speak to mortality's universality.

One can almost hear the whisper of dropping petals in the gallery's hushed atmosphere. This is not decoration but meditation, where beauty's fragility becomes its most profound statement. Ruysch transforms what might have been mere botanical illustration into something approaching the sublime—a reminder that even in 1700, artists understood that perfection lies not in preservation, but in accepting what fades.
