Painting Information

Rubens was friends with the Antwerp merchant Daniel Fourment, whose daughter Helena he later married. It has been established that the artist portrayed Susanna, another, elder daughter of the large Fourment couple, on several occasions; at Rubens's death, four such portraits were in his possession. The London painting, probably made while the artist's first wife, Isabella Brandt, was still alive, was entitled "Le chapeau de paille" (The Straw Hat). As recent research shows, this old inventory designation refers to a portrait of Susanna as a shepherdess (Brussels, privately owned), but not to the half-figure portrait in London, for here the twenty-five-year-old woman wears a felt hat decorated with feathers. She has her arms folded under her breasts, the wide-brimmed hat half shading her face. Smiling welcomingly, she looks with her large eyes at the painter, captivated by her beauty, who with this work has created one of his finest female portraits.
