Painting Information
This masterpiece seems to be the completion, the summation of Renoir's youthful oeuvre. At the same time, it speaks of the forty-year-old artist's interest in finding new paths. He introduces the viewer to the now-famous summer restaurant of Bougival, a favourite place for excursions along the Seine, and depicts a moment that has "flown by", with more than a whole dozen people resurrecting an incident that could be divided into several independent scenes. The red hulls of the boats and their white sails flash from the river in the background, and the intricate, built with a sure hand, patches of colour on the vegetation make us feel the summer heat. The same impression is gained from the foreground painted clothes of the individual figures, the tablecloth and the striped tarpaulin. The faces and figures are clearly delineated despite the bright patches of colour to emphasise with what determination and love the artist wants to portray their character and behaviour. Obviously, Renoir painted with the greatest love the young woman playing with the puppy - his future wife. Yet she does not stand out starkly from the other figures in the painting - a confession of the artist's sympathy for the people around him, so diverse and yet so closely connected.
