Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.7 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 31.8 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Renoir's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 90 × 63 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Pinacoteca Agnelli, Turin, Italy. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The canvas presents a young woman seated in three-quarter profile against a maritime backdrop, her nude form rendered with the pearlescent luminosity that distinguishes Renoir's mature work. The figure - we know her to be Aline Charigot, the artist's companion - is positioned on white drapery, her auburn hair cascading over one shoulder while her direct gaze engages the viewer with remarkable self-possession. Behind her, the suggestion of the Bay of Naples dissolves into impressionistic passages of blue and green, the distant landmass barely articulated through veils of atmospheric color.

The palette reveals Renoir's evolving sensibility following his Italian sojourn. The flesh tones, built up through delicate glazes of pink, cream, and pale ochre, achieve an almost porcelain quality that recalls Renaissance precedents rather than the broken color of pure Impressionism. The surrounding environment - rendered in cerulean, turquoise, and muted jade - provides a chromatic foil to the warm tonalities of the figure, while the white fabric introduces notes of reflected color, picking up blues and violets from the water beyond.

The brushwork demonstrates a fascinating duality. While the background retains the loose, atmospheric handling characteristic of Impressionism, with pigment applied in broad, confident strokes that merge and blur, the figure itself is modeled with increasing attention to form and contour. The paint application on the body is smoother, more controlled, building volume through subtle gradations rather than the fractured touch of his earlier work. This technical shift reflects Renoir's renewed interest in drawing and linear definition following his encounter with Raphael's frescoes.

Compositionally, the work achieves equilibrium through calculated asymmetry. The figure occupies the right portion of the canvas, her curved posture creating a gentle S-curve that leads the eye from the extended leg through the torso to the tilted head. The horizontal band of water provides stability, while the diagonal thrust of the distant shore introduces dynamic tension. The white drapery serves as both compositional anchor and tonal bridge, its folds echoing the undulating forms of both body and landscape.

This painting represents a pivotal moment in Renoir's artistic evolution, commissioned by Durand-Ruel after the success of an earlier version. The work synthesizes Impressionist sensitivity to light and atmosphere with a renewed commitment to classical form, marking the beginning of what would be termed his "dry" or "Ingres" period. The influence of Italian masters is evident in the sculptural treatment of the figure, yet Renoir maintains his distinctive sensuous touch and chromatic richness, creating a work that bridges nineteenth-century naturalism with timeless ideals of beauty.
