Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 9.7 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 12 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 39.6 × 88.6 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Picasso's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 349 × 776 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The tableau unfolds as a panorama of devastation, its protagonists locked in a choreography of anguish. At left, a bull looms with impassive gaze above a woman clutching her dead child, her mouth agape in soundless grief. The wounded horse occupies the central arena, its body pierced, neck arched in terminal agony. Below, a dismembered soldier sprawls across the canvas floor, his severed arm still grasping a broken sword. Women populate the remaining space: one thrusts a lamp through a window, another rushes from the right, while a third raises her arms skyward as flames consume the architecture behind her. A small winged creature, barely discernible, hovers in the upper left shadows.
Picasso's palette eschews color entirely, constructing his narrative through gradations of grey, white, and black. This chromatic austerity transforms the work into something beyond painting—a newsprint frozen in perpetual horror. The absence of color universalizes the specific tragedy, stripping away the particular to reveal the essential brutality beneath. These tonal values create a harsh, documentary quality that recalls both classical grisaille and contemporary photojournalism, establishing a visual language that speaks to antiquity and modernity simultaneously.
The artist employs a fractured, cubist vocabulary, yet harnesses it to unprecedented emotional effect. Forms splinter and reconstitute across the surface, bodies fragment yet remain legible in their distortion. Picasso's brushwork varies from broad, aggressive strokes in the architectural elements to precise linear delineation in the victims' features. The paint application itself becomes an act of violence, scraped and scumbled to create surfaces that mirror the destruction they depict.
The composition operates through calculated chaos, organizing its disparate elements within a rough pyramidal structure that both contains and amplifies the scene's disorder. Light sources multiply impossibly—the bull's eye, the woman's lamp, the eye-like bulb above—creating a spatial ambiguity that denies refuge or resolution. This deliberate confusion of perspective and illumination traps the viewer within the picture plane, making escape from witnessing impossible.
