Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 14.5 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 16.9 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 61.4 × 41.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Picasso's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 123 × 82.6 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Art Institute of Chicago, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The canvas presents a solitary figure, an elderly man bent into his instrument, his elongated form folding in upon itself with an almost architectural precision. The guitarist's gaunt frame dominates the pictorial space, his bony fingers splayed across the strings of his instrument, which alone breaks from the painting's chromatic severity with its warm, amber tonality. The musician's sightless eyes, suggested rather than detailed, and his open mouth hint at song or perhaps merely the effort of existence. His bare feet, angular and oversized, anchor him to an undefined ground, while his entire posture speaks of both dedication to his art and the weight of survival.

Picasso's palette here operates within the narrowest of ranges - variations of Prussian blue create a world drained of warmth, save for that single note of ochre in the guitar itself. This monochromatic approach does more than establish mood; it flattens the pictorial space, reducing the scene to essential forms while paradoxically deepening its emotional resonance. The blues shift from deep ultramarine in the shadows to pale, almost grey tones in the highlights, creating a nocturnal atmosphere that envelops both figure and viewer.

The artist's brushwork reveals itself in broad, assured strokes that model form through tonal gradation rather than precise detail. The paint application appears relatively thin, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain visible in places, contributing to the work's sense of material poverty. The handling recalls the mannered elongations of El Greco, whose influence Picasso absorbed during his Spanish sojourns, yet the simplification of form points toward a modernist sensibility.

Compositionally, the work operates through a series of curves and angles that create internal rhythm. The guitarist's hunched back forms a major arc, echoed in the curve of the guitar's body and countered by the angular projection of his crossed legs. This interplay of geometric forms guides the eye in a circular motion, always returning to the central relationship between musician and instrument.

Created during Picasso's residence in Barcelona, the painting emerges from a period of genuine privation in the artist's life. The Blue Period works, of which this stands as a prime example, reflect not merely aesthetic choices but a lived understanding of marginality. The influence of Symbolist painters like Munch and Gauguin manifests in the work's psychological dimension - this is portraiture less concerned with physiological accuracy than with states of being, with the existential condition of those society overlooks.
