Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 16.3 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 31 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Claude Monet's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 74.6 × 99.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Sunlight shatters across the water into a hundred broken reflections – blues, golds, deep greens – each one a quick, loaded stroke of the brush. Claude Monet painted this scene at La Grenouillere in the summer of 1869, working alongside Renoir on the banks of the Seine at a popular bathing and boating spot just outside Paris. What we see is not a polished studio picture but something caught in the act: figures clustered on the small circular island known as the "Camembert," a wooden walkway leading to a covered terrace on the right, and a scatter of empty rowboats nudging into the lower left corner like afterthoughts.

The water dominates. It takes up more than half the canvas, and Monet gives it everything – short horizontal dashes, broken patches of cerulean and umber, thick touches of white where the light hits hardest. There is almost no blending. Each stroke sits next to its neighbor, distinct and confident, so that the surface of the river seems to pulse. One can practically hear the lapping against those wooden hulls. The technique is rapid and declarative, closer to notation than description, and yet the effect is utterly convincing: you feel the weight and movement of real water.

Above this liquid field, the figures on the island are handled with surprising economy. Dark silhouettes in black and deep green cluster together, their forms barely articulated. A top hat here, a white dress there – Monet gives us just enough social information to understand this as a place of leisure, of bourgeois recreation, without pausing to render a single face. The people matter less as individuals than as shapes against the bright foliage behind them. That foliage, a dense wall of yellow-green and olive, reads almost as a flat backdrop, compressing the depth of the scene into a narrow band between water and sky.

Look at the fence of the boat-rental terrace on the right. Letters – partially legible, reading something like "BATEAUX" or "CANOTS" – are scratched into the white paint of the boarding. It is a wonderfully offhand detail, the kind of thing that anchors the painting in a specific, lived place rather than a generalized impression. Renoir painted a strikingly similar composition during the same sessions, now in Stockholm, but where Renoir softened and warmed, Monet kept his edges sharper, his contrasts bolder.

Perhaps what feels most modern here is the sheer ambition hiding inside a modest subject. Monet himself called these canvases mere sketches, bad ones even – writing in September 1869 that a finished painting of the baths remained "only a dream." Yet these so-called sketches broke open a new way of seeing. The broken color, the refusal to smooth and finish, the insistence that light on water was a subject worthy of total commitment – all of this anticipates the full arrival of Impressionism five years later.

Stand in front of this painting at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the air seems to warm. You can almost smell the river, feel the slight wobble of a boat underfoot. It is not a dream. It is the thing itself, caught wet and alive, before the moment could pass.
