Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.9 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.3 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 32.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Marcel Duchamp's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 145 × 113.3 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The domestic interior unfolds in planes of muted tonalities, where four figures coalesce into a rhythmic arrangement that mirrors the musical performance they enact. At the center, seated at a piano, Yvonne Duchamp commands the compositional focus, her form rendered in cool blue-grays that anchor the swirling movement around her. To the right, Magdeleine stands with violin and bow, her figure elongated and fragmented into angular segments that suggest both motion and sound. In the foreground, Suzanne appears partially dissolved into geometric facets, while behind the ensemble, the maternal presence emerges as a watchful guardian, her features simplified into essential forms.
The palette eschews vibrant hues for a sophisticated orchestration of earth tones—pale ochres, dusty roses, muted grays, and subtle blue-greens that create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. These chromatic choices function less as descriptive elements than as tonal harmonies, each color note carefully calibrated to resonate with its neighbors. The warm undertones of the background architecture contrast gently with the cooler passages defining the figures, establishing a visual counterpoint that echoes the musical theme.
Duchamp's brushwork reveals a tentative yet purposeful engagement with Cubist principles. The paint application varies from thin washes that allow the canvas texture to assert itself to more substantial passages where forms solidify momentarily before fragmenting again. This technical approach creates a sense of temporal flux, as if the viewer witnesses not a single moment but the accumulated impressions of an entire musical phrase. The artist maintains enough representational clarity to preserve the narrative while embracing the analytical fragmentation that would characterize his subsequent development.
The composition operates through a series of interlocking triangular relationships, with each figure occupying a distinct spatial zone while remaining connected through overlapping planes and echoed angles. The piano provides a horizontal anchor from which vertical elements rise and fall in measured intervals. This structural organization transforms the familial gathering into a visual symphony, where individual parts maintain their identity while contributing to a unified whole. The architectural elements—suggested doorways, walls, and furnishings—create a shallow stage that compresses the action into a relief-like arrangement.
As an early foray into Cubist experimentation, the work demonstrates Duchamp's initial response to the revolutionary pictorial language emerging in Paris. Unlike the more radical decompositions of Picasso or Braque, this painting retains a tenderness toward its subject matter, filtering avant-garde techniques through a lens of domestic intimacy. The work occupies a transitional moment, documenting not only a family music-making session but also an artist discovering new formal possibilities while maintaining emotional connections to his subjects. This duality—between innovation and tradition, between analysis and sentiment—would prove prophetic for Duchamp's subsequent trajectory, though few could have anticipated the radical departures that lay ahead.
