Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 16.8 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.1 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 32 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Marcel Duchamp's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 146.4 × 114 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Philadelphia Museum of Art, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The canvas presents us with a sequence of female forms, each dissolving into the next through a series of angular, overlapping planes. Five figures emerge and recede within the composition, their bodies suggested rather than defined, caught in a perpetual state of transformation. Duchamp constructs these forms through geometric facets that fragment and reconstruct the human figure, creating a visual rhythm that moves vertically through the picture plane. The bodies appear simultaneously solid and ephemeral, their contours breaking apart and reforming as our eye travels across the surface.
The palette consists predominantly of warm earth tones—ochres, siennas, and umbers—punctuated by passages of dusty yellow and pale cream. These colors create an atmosphere of temporal ambiguity, as if viewing the subject through aged glass or faded memory. The tonal variations are subtle yet purposeful, with darker browns anchoring the forms while lighter passages suggest illumination or exposed flesh. This chromatic restraint serves the work's conceptual ambitions, allowing the viewer to focus on the sequential nature of the imagery rather than being distracted by decorative color.
Duchamp's brushwork reveals a deliberate tension between control and spontaneity. The paint application varies from thinly washed areas that allow the canvas to breathe through, to more densely worked passages where the pigment accumulates. This variation in handling creates a sense of temporal layering within the paint itself. The artist employs both broad, gestural strokes and more precise linear elements, building form through an accumulation of marks rather than through traditional modeling.
The compositional structure operates on multiple levels. Vertically, the figures create a cascading movement from top to bottom, while horizontally, the overlapping forms generate a sense of depth without recourse to conventional perspective. The eye is never allowed to rest on a single focal point; instead, it must continually navigate between the various incarnations of the figure. This restless visual movement mirrors the work's thematic concern with temporal progression and bodily transformation.
This painting occupies a pivotal position in Duchamp's early development, marking his transition from Post-Impressionist influences toward a more radical investigation of movement and time. The influence of chronophotographic experiments is evident in the serial presentation of the figure, yet Duchamp transforms this mechanical recording of motion into something more psychologically complex. The progressive disrobing suggested by the title and treatment introduces an erotic dimension that complicates the scientific objectivity of motion studies. This synthesis of analytical fragmentation with sensual subject matter anticipates not only Duchamp's subsequent masterworks but also points toward broader concerns within early twentieth-century modernism—the desire to capture temporal experience within the static confines of the picture plane, and the impulse to reveal hidden dimensions of everyday perception.
