Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 15.3 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 17.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 26.7 × 37.8 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Fernand Léger's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 64.5 × 92 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Cylindrical limbs lock together like plumbing joints. A woman reclines across the canvas, but her body has been rebuilt – every curve replaced by polished tubes, every soft fold of skin swapped for something closer to industrial piping. Fernand Léger painted Reclining Woman in 1922, and it still feels like a provocation: the human figure reimagined as machine.

She holds a white cup or vessel between thick, segmented fingers. Her face, rendered with a curious calm, is the one passage where something recognizably human persists – dark hair pulled into neat coils, a steady gaze, features simplified but not emptied. Below the neck, though, tenderness disappears. Arms, torso, legs – all have been given the same volumetric treatment, modeled in tones of warm taupe and grey as if cast from some heavy alloy. A mustard-yellow garment drapes across her midsection and thighs, its color saturated and flat, almost poster-like against the muted flesh tones. One senses weight here. Not softness, not warmth – weight.

Behind her, the background operates as a separate system entirely. Bold black bands frame the composition like structural girders. A blue-and-white diamond pattern – harlequin checks – appears at upper right and along one edge, introducing a decorative rhythm that pushes against the figure's solidity. Vertical yellow stripes anchor the left margin. Black circles punctuate the surrounding geometry. Everything is compressed into a shallow space with almost no recession; foreground and background occupy essentially the same plane.

Léger was updating an old subject. The reclining female nude – the odalisque – runs through centuries of European painting, from Titian's Venus of Urbino to Manet's Olympia. But where those predecessors offered pliant flesh and intimate atmosphere, Léger substitutes hard contours and mechanical precision. He wanted paintings in which the manufactured object became the principal figure, rendered with enough clarity to reveal what he called "absolute sculptural value" rather than sentimental feeling. This is Purism at work – an industrial classicism stripped of ornament, focused on the utilitarian object as a subject worthy of art.

What makes the painting linger, though, is its strange tenderness despite the armor. Look at how gently she cradles that cup. The gesture is domestic, unhurried, almost absent-minded – a moment of private calm wrapped inside a body that looks engineered for a factory floor. Perhaps that contradiction is precisely what Fernand Leger intended: modernity as a condition lived in the body, not merely observed from outside.

The palette holds everything in tension. Cool blues and stark blacks push outward; warm ochres and that confident yellow pull you back toward the figure. Nothing bleeds. Every edge is deliberate. You can almost hear the hum of the composition – tight, rhythmic, constructed with the same logic as a well-designed engine.

She is not inviting. She is not decorative. She simply is – monumental, still, and oddly present, a century after Leger set her down.
