The male figure, his head crowned with dark ivy, bends toward his companion whose face tilts upward, eyes closed in surrender. Her auburn hair cascades with small flowers, while her pale flesh emerges from the decorative chrysalis that envelops them both. They stand precariously at the edge of a flowering meadow, the verdant carpet beneath them alive with circular blooms in purple, pink, and blue.

The palette operates through calculated contrasts - the warm, Byzantine gold that dominates the composition set against the cooler greens and purples of the meadow below. Within the golden expanse, Klimt orchestrates a symphony of pattern: the man's robe carries stark rectangles in black, white, and silver, while the woman's garment flows with circular motifs, spirals, and flower-like forms in reds, blues, and greens. The Secession movement, of which Klimt was a founding member, sought to break from academic tradition while embracing the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk - the total work of art. The painting's decorative splendor and symbolic content reflect fin-de-siècle Vienna's preoccupation with love, death, and the unconscious, themes that permeated the city's intellectual and artistic circles during this twilight period of the Habsburg Empire.
