1775-1851
English Romanticism Painter
Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) was an English painter and one of the greatest landscape artists in the history of Western art. He is renowned for his ability to capture the essence of light and atmosphere in his paintings, and for his use of color to convey emotion and mood.
Turner was born in London, England, on April 23, 1775, to a family of modest means. His father was a barber and wig-maker, and his mother was the daughter of a butcher. Despite their limited resources, Turner's parents recognized his artistic talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue his passion.
Turner was accepted into the Royal Academy of Arts in London at the age of 14, and he began exhibiting his work there shortly thereafter. He quickly gained a reputation as a prodigious talent, and his early works were characterized by their meticulous attention to detail and their realistic portrayal of landscapes and seascapes.
In the early 1800s, Turner began to experiment with more expressive techniques, using looser brushstrokes and more vivid colors to convey emotion and mood. His paintings from this period, such as "The Slave Ship" (1840) and "Rain, Steam and Speed – The Great Western Railway" (1844), are considered masterpieces of Romanticism.
Turner was a prolific artist, producing over 550 oil paintings, as well as thousands of watercolors, sketches, and drawings, over the course of his career. His work has had a profound influence on the development of landscape painting, and his innovative techniques continue to inspire artists to this day.
Despite his artistic success, Turner was a private and reclusive man, and he never married or had children. He died in London on December 19, 1851, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral, where his legacy continues to be celebrated.
