Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13.6 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 39.6 × 63 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Winslow Homer's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 61.5 × 97 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery of Art, Washington, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Four figures lean hard to windward in a catboat cutting through deep Atlantic swells, and you can almost hear the spray hissing against the hull. Winslow Homer's Breezing Up (A Fair Wind), begun around 1873 and completed in 1876 – the nation's centennial year – is a painting that feels like salt air on skin. It is compact, alive, and deceptively casual.

The composition tilts. Everything pitches along a diagonal that runs from the taut sail in the upper left down through the hull to the churning water at the lower right. Three boys and a weathered man occupy the boat, their weight shifted to counterbalance the wind's pull. One boy grips the gunwale; another perches near the stern with the easy confidence of someone raised on the water. The man at the tiller – broad-hatted, quietly commanding – steers with the kind of economy that suggests years of practice rather than effort. A smaller figure in red sits low, partly sheltered. On the horizon, a schooner ghosts along under full sail, a reminder that this is working ocean, not a pleasure pond.

Homer gives us a sky of layered blues and grays, the clouds piled up in loose, almost sculptural passages that recall Constable's cloud studies, though with a distinctly American frankness. The water below is darker – deep viridian and near-black – broken by flecks of white where the chop catches light. Between these two expanses, the warm sienna of the boat's hull and the creamy triangle of the sail provide the painting's tonal anchor. That red garment on the smaller boy works like a struck match in the middle of the composition: small, hot, impossible to ignore.

Brushwork varies with purpose. The sail is rendered in broad, flat strokes that suggest canvas stretched tight. The sea is thicker, more agitated – you can see where Homer dragged and stippled pigment to get the restless surface right. Faces and hands are treated with just enough definition to convey character without freezing into portrait stiffness. This selective focus keeps the painting breathing.

What Homer achieves here is a particular emotional register: exhilaration held in check by competence. The wind is strong, the boat heels sharply, but nobody panics. There is pleasure in the danger, and skill in the pleasure. It is a sentiment perfectly tuned to its historical moment – a young country looking forward after the trauma of civil war, eager for images of vigor and self-reliance. Homer, who had sharpened his eye as a wartime illustrator for Harper's Weekly, understood better than most how to build narrative into a single frozen instant.

Perhaps what makes this painting endure beyond its era is that diagonal energy, that sense of a vessel about to slice past us and out of the frame. Nothing here is static. Even the clouds seem to move. Standing before it at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, you feel less like a spectator and more like someone who just missed the chance to climb aboard.
