Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 14.1 × 20.1 in print therefore arrives as 16.4 × 22.4 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 28.9 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Winslow Homer's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 35.7 × 51 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The winter landscape unfolds before us with an almost startling immediacy—a sleigh poised at the crest of a snow-covered hill, its two occupants rendered as mere suggestions against the vast expanse of white. Homer presents us with a moment of suspended motion, where the vehicle teeters on the edge of descent, about to vanish beyond our line of sight. The figures themselves are reduced to essential marks: one catching the wan moonlight in strokes of yellow, the other distinguished by a flash of red scarf. Above, birds wheel through the turbulent sky, their dark forms punctuating the atmospheric drama.
Homer's palette operates within a remarkably constrained range, yet achieves extraordinary tonal complexity. The snow itself resists any simplistic rendering as mere white, instead revealing subtle gradations of blue and pink that trace the sleigh's passage up the slope. These delicate color notes suggest both the reflective properties of snow under moonlight and the lingering warmth of twilight. The sky broods in deep prussian and midnight blues, relieved by a single break in the clouds where pale light struggles through—not quite moonlight, not quite the last gasp of day.
The artist's brushwork demonstrates a confident economy that speaks to his mature period. The snow's surface is built through broad, assured strokes that capture both its weight and luminosity. The tracks leading to the sleigh are articulated with surprising delicacy—those touches of blue and pink mentioned in contemporary accounts creating a pathway that serves both as narrative device and compositional anchor. The paint handling suggests rapid execution, yet nothing feels hasty or unconsidered.
Compositionally, Homer exploits the diagonal thrust of the hillside to create dynamic tension. The sleigh's precarious position at the ridge line divides the canvas between the solid certainty of the snow-covered slope and the void beyond. This edge functions as both horizon and precipice, lending the modest scene an unexpected psychological weight. The tracks create a vital counter-movement, drawing our eye upward even as the sleigh threatens to disappear downward.
That this small canvas remained unsigned and sequestered in Homer's studio until his death suggests something deeply personal about the work. Created during his Prouts Neck years, when he had largely withdrawn from society, the painting reflects the artist's increasing fascination with elemental forces and human vulnerability. The reduction of the human presence to near-abstraction speaks to Homer's evolving vision, where landscape assumes primacy and mankind exists as transient interruption rather than central subject.
The work's intimate scale and unfinished status invite us to consider it as a private meditation rather than public statement. In its spare beauty and emotional restraint, we glimpse Homer working through ideas that would inform his late seascapes—the same attention to atmospheric effects, the same interest in edges and boundaries, the same willingness to subordinate human drama to natural forces.
