Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 14.8 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 17.2 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 28.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Hans Holbein's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 56 × 38.8 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Against an azure ground of remarkable intensity, a woman sits in contemplative stillness, her white-capped head turned slightly away from our gaze. The geometry of her ermine cap creates a decisive architectural element, its structured form contrasting with the soft drape of her white shawl. A red squirrel nestles in her lap, its chain falling through fingers that seem curiously robust, while a starling perches at her shoulder, its plumage rendered with meticulous attention to each glossy feather.
Holbein's palette here operates through calculated restraint. The vivid azurite background—that characteristic blue of his English period—serves as a chromatic foil to the subject's monochromatic attire. Her white linens shift subtly into grey shadows, creating volumetric depth through tonal modulation rather than coloristic variety. The warm russet of the squirrel provides the sole note of earthy color, a carefully placed accent that draws the eye downward through the composition.
The artist's technical mastery reveals itself in his differentiation of textures. The transparent delicacy of the chemise, achieved through the thinnest glazes, contrasts with the opacity of the folded shawl. Holbein has employed the wooden end of his brush to indent the paint, creating actual furrows that he then articulated with fine black lines—a tactile approach that brings materiality to the painted surface. The ermine cap receives similar attention, its individual pelts delineated through layers of wet-in-wet greys and browns.
Compositionally, Holbein constrains his subject within a tight pictorial space, her form pressed close to the picture plane. The three-quarter turn creates a spiral movement from cap to shoulder to hands, while the diagonal of her arm establishes a stable base at the canvas edge. This formulaic arrangement—which the artist employed repeatedly during this period—achieves its effect through precision rather than innovation.
The portrait emerges from a moment of social aspiration, when Holbein's German precision met English patronage. The symbolic freight of the animals—the starling punning on East Harling, the squirrel referencing Lovell heraldry—transforms portraiture into a document of property and lineage. This convergence of naturalistic observation and emblematic meaning characterizes Holbein's English work, where surface accuracy serves deeper purposes of social positioning and familial commemoration.
