Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17.5 in print therefore arrives as 24 × 19.9 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.3 × 33.4 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Gauguin's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 92 × 73 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Christ's body glows the color of ripe wheat, almost buttery, pressed flat against a cross of dark umber that barely bothers to cast a shadow. Everything around him has been keyed to that same autumn pitch – the fields, the trees, the tiled roofs of the little Breton village receding into low hills. Gauguin has drained the scene of ordinary depth. Foreground and horizon fold into one another like pages of the same book.

Three Breton women kneel at the foot of the cross, wrapped in their black bodices and starched white coifs. They do not weep. They do not gesture. Their stillness is the stillness of people accustomed to prayer at fixed hours, and one imagines the Angelus bell drifting across the fields at six in the evening, the light already thickening. A fourth figure, further off, climbs a low stone wall; a farmer in a dark smock crosses the middle distance. Life continues around the Crucifixion as if it were a fixture of the landscape, no more strange than the apple trees.

That yellow. It is the whole argument of the picture. Gauguin uses it to bind Christ to the harvested fields, to the peasants' faith, to the cycle of grain that dies and returns – a rural theology he found irresistible in Pont-Aven. The color is neither naturalistic nor symbolic in a tidy sense. It simply saturates everything it touches, insisting that piety and place are the same substance.

Look at the contours. Gauguin outlines the figures in dark blue and reddish brown, the way a stained-glass maker leads his panels, or the way a Japanese woodblock artist locks a form into place. This is the cloisonné manner he was developing with Émile Bernard at exactly this moment, and it puts him squarely outside the Impressionist project he had recently abandoned. No flickering light. No broken brushwork. Instead, broad zones of color pressed together like inlays.

The brushwork itself is matter-of-fact, almost humble – nothing virtuoso, nothing showy. A patch of orange foliage on the right has been laid in with quick horizontal strokes that read, from a step back, as a single burning tree. Small discoveries like this reward slow looking.

What lingers is the strangeness of the mood. The Crucifixion has been transplanted into a Breton autumn and made to belong there, as if it had always been growing in the hedgerow. Within a few years Gauguin would be gone – Tahiti, the Marquesas, the long self-exile. This painting, held now in Buffalo at the Albright-Knox, is where that departure begins: not yet in the tropics, but already elsewhere.
