Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13.9 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.3 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 21.8 × 33.9 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Caspar David Friedrich's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 110.4 × 171 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Germany. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A thin crescent moon hangs high in an ochre-washed sky, so pale it almost dissolves into the fading light. Below, a graveyard sinks into mist. Bare oaks claw upward, their black limbs splayed like arthritic fingers around the last standing fragment of a Gothic church. Look closely at the base of those trees and you notice something eerie: their trunks simply vanish into fog, as if the earth itself were slowly swallowing them.

Caspar David Friedrich painted Abbey among Oak Trees around 1809/10 as a companion to his Monk by the Sea, and the two were bought together by the Prussian king at the Berlin Academy exhibition of 1810 – reportedly at the urging of his fifteen-year-old son. It is easy to see why a boy might have been transfixed. This is a picture that behaves less like a landscape than like a slow, sustained chord.

A procession of monks, barely legible, carries a coffin through the ruined portal. You have to hunt for them. Once found, they seem to have been there always, small dark verticals moving toward the pointed-arch window that Friedrich borrowed from the abbey ruins at Eldena, near Greifswald on the Baltic coast. He idealised what he saw there, opening up a window that had been bricked shut in his day and inventing a doorway that never existed. The Romantics loved Gothic architecture as something organically German, a style that grew rather than was built, and Friedrich makes the tracery echo the branches around it. Stone and wood aspire in the same direction.

The palette is severely narrowed – bitumen browns, soot blacks, and that single warm horizon of dull gold. Two tiny points of candlelight glimmer inside the ruin, behind what one takes to be a crucifix on an altar. They are almost nothing, and yet they carry the whole emotional weight of the picture. Hope, if that is what it is, arrives at the scale of a pinhead.

Friedrich's brushwork here is quiet, deliberate, almost secretive. The oaks are drawn with a draughtsman's precision against a sky worked so thinly it feels breathed onto the canvas rather than painted. Depth barely exists; foreground graves, middle-ground ruin, and distant sky press into one flat plane of feeling. One senses the cold – a damp graveyard cold that gets into the shoes.

Carl Gustav Carus, Friedrich's friend and fellow painter, called this perhaps the most profound poetic work in modern landscape. Standing before it in Berlin, one might agree, and also feel that "landscape" is not quite the word. It is a threshold picture. Everything living has already leaned toward what comes next.
