Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 11.9 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 14.2 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 28 × 51.2 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Frederic Edwin Church's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 168 × 302.9 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A waterfall tumbles into a still pool at the picture's heart, so brightly lit it almost hums. Around it, Frederic Edwin Church has assembled an entire continent. Snow-capped Chimborazo glimmers in the far distance, pale as bone against a bruised sky, while the foreground teems with tropical foliage so precisely rendered you could name the species. Between these two extremes lies every climate in between: temperate meadows, wooded slopes, a silver ribbon of river winding through the middle ground.

This is not one place. It is many places compressed into a single visionary landscape, stitched together from the pencil and oil studies Church brought back from Ecuador after his 1853 and 1857 expeditions. Alexander von Humboldt, the German naturalist whose writings sent him south, had described the Andes as a living laboratory where you could climb from jungle to glacier in a single day. Church painted that idea whole.

Look at the right foreground. A slender white-barked tree rises against the darker canopy, and near its base a small crucifix leans by the path – a wayside shrine so easily missed that finding it feels like a private discovery. Two tiny figures pause there, dwarfed by ferns and epiphytes. Perhaps they are pilgrims; perhaps simply travelers. Their smallness is the point.

The palette runs from mossy viridian and warm sienna in the near woods to cool cerulean and pearl in the mountains, with the waterfall's spray catching a warm coral tint from the low sun. Church glazes his greens in transparent layers so the light seems to come from within the leaves themselves. His brush, when it turns to distant snow or drifting cloud, becomes almost invisible – the surface polished, enameled, without a trace of the hand.

When Heart of the Andes was first shown in 1859, Church staged it like theater: a darkened room, gas jets bounced off silver reflectors, a heavy window-frame surround, and opera glasses handed out so visitors could pore over the botanical detail. Thirteen thousand people a month queued up and paid their quarter. Hard to imagine now, in an age of infinite images, but this canvas was a kind of virtual reality – the closest most Americans would ever get to the equator.

Standing before it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art New York USA, what strikes me is the air. You can almost feel the humidity lifting off the pool, the cool alpine wind sliding down from the peaks, the two meeting somewhere near that little cross. Frederic Edwin Church wanted his viewers to believe in the whole world at once. He nearly pulls it off. The Hudson River School never reached further, or higher, than this.
