Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 11.7 × 16.8 in print therefore arrives as 14.1 × 19.1 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 20.9 × 29.9 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Thomas Eakins's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 29.8 × 42.6 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Lamplight pools across a small round table, catching the ivory and ebony of chess pieces mid-game. Two elderly men lean in from opposite sides, absorbed to the exclusion of everything else. Between them, upright and slightly behind, stands a third figure – Thomas Eakins's father, Benjamin – hands clasped or resting quietly, watching the play unfold. The room is a Philadelphia parlor in the Renaissance Revival taste, dense with dark wood, patterned carpet, and the polished clutter of a cultivated bourgeois interior.

Eakins organizes the whole scene around that pool of warm light on the chessboard. Everything radiates outward from it: the tilted heads of the players, the vertical anchor of the father, the glint on a decanter to the left, the ormolu clock ticking somewhere on the mantel behind. Depth is built patiently, room by room almost, receding into a shadowed doorway at the right where furniture and wall panels dissolve into brown-black gloom.

The palette runs on umber, mahogany, oxblood red and old gold, with the crimson carpet supplying most of the picture's heat. Against this, the white shirtfronts and pale hands of the three men read almost like small lanterns. One notices, after a moment, how carefully Eakins has painted the crumpled napkin or handkerchief at the left player's knee – a tiny, offhand passage of white that quietly balances the composition.

The brushwork is disciplined, close, almost invisible in the manner drilled into him by Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris. A reproduction of a Gérôme hangs above the mantel, a discreet act of homage. So too is the Latin inscription Eakins slipped onto the drawer of the chess table, naming himself as Benjamin Eakins's son and dating the picture to '76. The whole painting is, in a sense, a filial gesture: a portrait of his father's world, its friendships, its rituals, its evening quiet.

What surprises is the intimacy of scale. This is a small painting doing the work of a much larger one, and standing before it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York one feels almost intrusive, as if leaning over the shoulder of a game already half won. There is no drama in the Baroque sense, no Caravaggesque theatre – only concentration, and the faint suggestion of pipe smoke or coal warmth in a well-kept room.

Eakins was not yet the controversial anatomist and teacher he would become. Here he is patient, tender, entirely at home. Perhaps that is why the picture holds so well: it was made for love before it was made for reputation. When it entered the Metropolitan in 1881 as the first gift accepted from a living American artist, it carried that private warmth into public view, where it still glows, quietly, more than a century later.
