Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 12.9 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 15.2 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 41.2 × 69.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Claude Lorrain's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 111.4 × 186.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The narrative unfolds at the mouth of a rugged cave where King David, draped in regal crimson, raises his hands in a gesture of refusal. Three warriors, their bodies taut with exhaustion, proffer water drawn from the well at Bethlehem's gate. To the right, additional figures emerge from the shadowed depths of Adullam, while far below in the valley, the minute forms of the Philistine encampment can be discerned, their tents barely visible against the expansive landscape. The vast distance between cave and city underscores the perilous nature of the warriors' undertaking.
Claude's palette moves from the warm ochres and umbers of the foreground earth through subtle gradations of green in the middle distance to the ethereal blues and pearl grays of the receding hills. The golden light of late afternoon suffuses the entire composition, creating an atmosphere of temporal suspension. This luminous quality, so characteristic of Claude's mature work, transforms what might have been a straightforward biblical narrative into a meditation on divine providence and human virtue.
The artist's meticulous technique reveals itself in the careful delineation of botanical specimens along the painting's lower edge and the delicate rendering of architectural forms dissolving into atmospheric perspective. Though areas of damage compromise our full appreciation of Claude's brushwork, particularly in the central tree and portions of the sky, the surviving passages demonstrate his extraordinary ability to suggest both material substance and immaterial light through subtle glazes and scumbles.
The composition employs Claude's signature tripartite structure: the dark repoussoir of the cave and figures at right balanced by the majestic central tree, with the luminous vista opening between them. This arrangement creates a visual pathway that leads the eye from the immediate drama of David's refusal through successive planes of landscape toward the infinite horizon. The placement of the foreground action slightly off-center generates a dynamic tension that prevents the scene from becoming merely picturesque.
Commissioned in 1658 for Prince Agostino Chigi, nephew to Pope Alexander VII, this rarely depicted Old Testament subject carried particular resonance. The painting's pairing with Salvator Rosa's sensuous mythological scene created a deliberate moral contrast between princely restraint and pagan excess. Claude's interpretation transforms a minor biblical episode into a exemplum virtutis, where landscape itself becomes a participant in the sacred drama, its serene expanses suggesting the divine order that David's gesture acknowledges.
