Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 15.1 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 17.5 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 28.9 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Claude-Joseph Vernet's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 115 × 164 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A woman in white lies limp across a rock near the center of the shore, and the people around her seem to have no idea what to do with their hands. One flings both arms toward the sky, another bends over her, a third turns away. A few steps to the left a small dog trots along the wet sand, oblivious, while two men haul a bundle out of reach of the surf. Claude-Joseph Vernet packs a whole drama into this narrow strip of beach, and then sets it beneath a sky that dwarfs it.

That sky does most of the talking. Charcoal clouds roll across the top of the canvas, but in the middle they tear open onto a patch of clean blue, and a shaft of light falls on the far mountains so that they glow pale gold. On the right the mood flips again: a sulfurous orange haze, cut by a zigzag of lightning. Below, the sea is not the usual stage-gray but a cold bottle green, and where the swells rise you can almost see light pass through them before they break into white spray. On the left, a wave smashes against the cliffs and spills back down in sheets, and the tree above it is bent nearly flat by the wind.

A Shipwreck in Stormy Seas belonged to a pair. Vernet painted it in 1773 alongside a tranquil harbor scene, the two first known simply as Calm and Tempest; they had been ordered on behalf of the King of Poland but were bought instead by Robert Clive, Clive of India. When the painter wrote about them he cared mainly about composition, light and the opposite moods of nature. His contemporaries were reading Edmund Burke on the sublime, the thrill of standing safely before something vast and dangerous, and this canvas is built to deliver exactly that shiver.

Yet Vernet was no mere stage designer. His ships were drawn from careful study, and these two are armed merchant vessels of an older type. The one to the left, single-decked, seems to fly a British red ensign. The larger ship on the right heels over violently, sails ripped loose, its lower row of gun-ports shut against the sea. In the bottom right corner, broken timbers show what happens to those that lose this fight. For eighteenth-century buyers, many of whom had money or family at sea, such scenes were invented but hardly far-fetched.

Look back at the lighthouse on its headland. It stands tall and solid, catching the light, and its lamp is dark. The storm has evidently come too fast for anyone to light it. Somewhere beyond the clouds, though, the coast is already basking in sunshine, as if the weather has only to move a little further to let everyone breathe again.
