Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 15.8 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 18.1 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 40.2 × 55.1 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Caravaggio's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 94 × 125.4 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Firelight catches the weathered furrows of an old man's brow. Here, in The Denial of Saint Peter, Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio strips the biblical narrative to its psychological core—three figures locked in a moment of spiritual crisis. Painted in Naples during the artist's final months in 1610, this work represents the culmination of his revolutionary approach to sacred drama.

Peter dominates the right side of the composition, his worn hands crossed defensively over his chest. Raw sienna and umber model his flesh, while touches of warm ochre illuminate the fabric of his tunic. Behind him lurks darkness—not merely absence of light but palpable void. Caravaggio has abandoned the middle tones entirely. Light erupts from what must be the courtyard fire, casting harsh shadows that bisect faces and fragment forms.

A soldier in burnished armor leans in from the left, his pointing finger a vector of accusation. Between them, a woman wrapped in white linen presses forward, her two raised fingers marking Peter's second and third denials. Notice how Caravaggio applies paint more thinly here than in his Roman works—swift, economical strokes that suggest urgency, perhaps mirroring his own fugitive state. The impasto builds only in the brightest passages: Peter's illuminated forehead, the metallic gleam of the soldier's helmet.

Diagonal forces govern the composition. Arms, gazes, and gestures create intersecting lines that converge on Peter's anguished face. Even the woman's headscarf forms a sharp angle pointing toward the apostle. This geometric tension transforms a simple interior into a claustrophobic trap. One can almost feel the heat from that unseen fire, hear the crackle of burning wood punctuating the interrogation.

The soldier's helmet deserves scrutiny—a precise late fifteenth-century model that Caravaggio must have studied from life. Such anachronistic details collapse historical distance, making ancient betrayal immediate. Compare this temporal disruption to his Martyrdom of Saint Ursula, where contemporary armor similarly breaches the fourth wall. Both works belong to Baroque Italy's broader meditation on guilt and redemption, themes that resonated through Counter-Reformation theology.

Today, standing before this canvas in a climate-controlled gallery, we might forget its original context—painted by a man pursued by justice, wrestling with his own denials and betrayals. Perhaps that's why Peter's expression transcends mere fear. Caravaggio captures something more complex: the precise moment when self-knowledge becomes unbearable. The painting remains lodged in memory not for its biblical accuracy but for this recognition—how swiftly certainty crumbles, how easily we become strangers to ourselves.
