Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13.6 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 15.9 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 14.8 × 23.6 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Canaletto's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 75.9 × 119.7 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

A small white dog trots across the foreground, nose down, ignoring everything around it. Above it rises one of the most famous stages in Europe: the Piazzetta in Venice, seen from a raised position as though from a balcony, with the stone square opening into the larger Piazza San Marco beyond. Men in dark cloaks and tricorn hats stand in pairs, a cluster of townspeople gathers under the arcade at left, and a few figures in red and pale blue catch the light like scattered sequins.

The architecture does the real work. On the left, the Marciana Library runs back in a long, repeating rhythm of arches, columns and rooftop statues. On the right, the Doge's Palace answers with its pink and cream diamond-patterned wall and a ground floor of pointed Gothic arches. Between them the bell tower shoots up into the sky, slightly off center, and in the distance the domes and golden mosaics of the Basilica glow beside a row of tall red flagpoles. Follow the edges of the rooflines, the cornices and the white marble bands laid into the pavement before the library, and they all slide toward the same spot: the clock tower at the far end, its blue dial a quiet target for the whole composition.

This sense of order did not come from nowhere. Canaletto started out painting scenery for opera productions, where a flat backdrop had to convince an audience of deep streets and grand squares. He carried those lessons into his views of the city, building space with precise perspective and keeping his colors to a restrained range of warm stone, soft rose, sandy brown and that wide blue sky. The result feels almost like a photograph, yet nothing here is accidental. Each arch is placed, each shadow measured.

Look at the light. The sun falls fully on the library facade, turning it a pale honey color, while the base of the Doge's Palace and the right side of the square sink into cool shade. That division gives the picture its depth as much as the lines do. Overhead, the clouds are loose and feathery, a looser touch than the crisp buildings below, and they keep the scene from feeling frozen.

Visitors to Venice in the eighteenth century wanted to take this view home, and pictures like this one, now in the Norton Simon Museum, gave them exactly that. Still, the painting is more than a souvenir. The people are tiny against the stone, going about errands and conversations, and the city seems to hold them gently in its geometry. That little dog, meanwhile, keeps walking, the one figure with no interest at all in the grand view.
