Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 15.3 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 21.2 × 35.4 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Canaletto's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 46.4 × 77.5 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Sunlight washes across the water like spilled milk, pale and diffuse, turning the Grand Canal into a sheet of greenish glass. Canaletto gives us The Grand Canal, Venice, Looking South toward the Rialto Bridge from a vantage point slightly above the waterline – as if we are standing on a balcony or the deck of a moored vessel – and the effect is one of panoramic calm. Gondolas and cargo boats cluster in the middle distance, their reflections loose and trembling beneath them. Figures pole and row with a rhythm you can almost hear: the soft knock of an oar, the lap of displaced water against stone.

What strikes you first is the architecture, not the people. Palazzo facades line both banks in a continuous wall of cream, terracotta, and faded ochre, their arched ground-floor loggias opening darkly onto the canal. On the right, the large building with its double tier of arcades dominates – a structure rendered with such geometric precision that each window bay reads clearly, shadow by shadow. Canaletto was meticulous about this kind of thing, and yet he was no slave to topographic accuracy. He routinely adjusted sightlines, widened canals, or shifted buildings so that a composition could breathe. The view here feels broader and more symmetrical than any single standpoint would actually permit. It is Venice as Venice wants to be remembered: orderly, luminous, serenely grand.

The palette stays cool and controlled. Sky occupies nearly half the canvas – a thin cerulean that pales toward the horizon, broken only by a low cluster of cloud painted with a dry, almost chalky touch. Below, the water holds a faint viridian tint, its surface rendered with tiny horizontal strokes that suggest reflection without insisting on it. Against these cool expanses, the warm sienna and umber of brick walls and chimney pots anchor the composition, giving it weight along the edges. There is no dramatic chiaroscuro here, no Caravaggesque plunge into darkness. Light arrives evenly, from somewhere high and slightly left, flattening shadows and letting every surface declare itself.

Canaletto likely produced this canvas as part of a group of twenty identically sized views, almost certainly for Joseph Smith, the British consul in Venice and one of the artist's most important patrons. Smith understood that these paintings worked best in series – a portable Grand Tour, assembled wall by wall. English collectors wanted Venice catalogued and composed, and Canaletto obliged with an exactitude that borders on devotion. Yet the paintings never feel merely documentary. A quiet poetry runs through them.

Look at the foreground boats. One gondolier leans into his stroke, his red cap a sharp punctuation mark against the muted water. Nearby, a standing figure in a white garment turns toward us – or perhaps toward nothing, simply caught mid-gesture. These small human incidents give the scene its pulse. Without them, the painting would be an elevation drawing. With them, it becomes a place where time passes, where someone is late for an appointment, where a fisherman mends a net.

Compared to the looser, more atmospheric vedute of Francesco Guardi, who painted the same city a generation later with flickering brushwork and dissolving edges, Canaletto's vision is architectural in its bones. Every cornice holds firm. Every mooring post casts a defined shadow. And yet – perhaps because of the soft light, or the gentle curve of the canal pulling the eye southward – the painting never feels rigid. It breathes the way a warm afternoon breathes: slowly, with the faint smell of salt and stone.
