Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 13 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 15.4 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 23.6 × 39.4 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Canaletto's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 47 × 77.8 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The Grand Canal, Venice, Looking Southeast, with the Campo della Carità to the Right, c.1730/40 by Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto, is a masterful celebration of Venice’s grandeur. In this captivating vista, Canaletto immortalizes the essence of the city's bustling waterways and architectural splendor.

Canaletto's composition is meticulously balanced, drawing the viewer’s eye along the canal's sinuous curve. The perspective guides us from the foreground, where gondoliers navigate their boats with effortless grace, toward the distant horizon lined with a succession of stately buildings. This arrangement creates a dynamic sense of depth and movement, embodying the rhythm of Venetian life.

Rendered with Canaletto’s characteristic precision, the painting combines architectural accuracy with a lively depiction of daily activities. His use of light is particularly noteworthy; a crisp, clear daylight bathes the scene, enhancing the reflective quality of the water and the intricate details of the buildings. The colors are vibrant yet harmonious, with the turquoise canal juxtaposed against the warm tones of the brick and stone façades.

In the foreground, gondolas glide serenely, each one distinct in form and function. The figures, though small, are animated and engaging, offering a snapshot of the everyday interactions that animate the canal. The detailed renderings of the gondolas' prows and the attire of the gondoliers add to the painting’s authenticity and charm.

The background showcases Venice's architectural marvels. The towering bell tower of Campo della Carità on the right serves as a focal point, its slender spire piercing the sky. The buildings along the canal are depicted with meticulous attention to their unique architectural features, from the ornate windows to the weathered brickwork, illustrating Canaletto's keen observational skills.

Canaletto’s painting is not merely a topographical record but an evocative representation of Venice’s spirit. The interplay of light and shadow, the bustling yet serene ambiance, and the harmonious composition all contribute to a work that is as much about the experience of the city as it is about its physical reality. This painting captures the timeless allure of Venice, a place where history and daily life converge in a vibrant, aquatic symphony.
