Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 10.2 × 7.5 in print therefore arrives as 12.6 × 9.8 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 20.1 × 14.7 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Jan van Eyck's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 26 × 19 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The sitter confronts us with an unwavering gaze, his face emerging from darkness with an almost palpable immediacy. The man wears an extravagant red chaperon, its fabric twisted and piled high upon his head in an elaborate construction that dominates the upper portion of the panel. The hood's tail wraps around the outside edge, tucked above the left eye, while its end flourishes upward in a theatrical gesture. Beneath this flamboyant headpiece, we glimpse a high-collared houpelande trimmed with brown fur, the white shirt barely visible at the neck—the attire of a prosperous burgher rather than nobility.
The chromatic restraint heightens the painting's psychological intensity. Against what was once a blue ground, now blackened by time or overpaint, the brilliant vermillion turban creates a shocking contrast. This concentrated burst of color draws our attention upward, yet the pale, luminous face commands equal weight through its careful modeling in light. Van Eyck employs a limited palette with calculated precision, allowing the interplay between the scarlet fabric and the flesh tones to generate the work's visual drama.
The artist's technical prowess reveals itself in seemingly effortless details. The stubble on the chin consists of minute dabs—darker brown dots laid down first, then lighter touches of white mixed with blue to catch the light. This rapid, economical approach achieves greater verisimilitude than the painstaking facial hair in works by his contemporaries. The deep furrows around the eyes, the prominent veins at the temple, the weathered lines framing the mouth—all speak to van Eyck's ability to capture the specific rather than the idealized.
The composition demonstrates subtle manipulation of naturalistic observation. The shoulders slope unnaturally narrow while the head assumes an enlarged proportion, creating a psychological monumentality that transcends mere likeness. The face turns slightly, the nose rendered more in profile than the rest of the features—a deliberate adjustment that enhances recognition. Light rakes across from the left, casting the right side into shadow, suggesting the sitter turns away from a strong illumination toward our space.
This work emerges from the sophisticated visual culture of fifteenth-century Burgundy, where van Eyck served as court painter to Philip the Good. The prominent motto "Als Ich Can" carved into the frame—a play on the artist's name meaning "as I can, but not as I would"—positions this as both personal statement and professional manifesto. The apparent humility masks considerable artistic ambition, for this portrait achieves an intensity of presence that transcends its modest scale and limited means.
