Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 14.3 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 16.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 27.2 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Dirck van Baburen's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 196.5 × 297.2 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Gemäldegalerie, Berlin, Germany. Full size guide.

About the Painting

The scene unfolds with theatrical immediacy: Christ, draped in a rust-colored robe, kneels before Peter in an act of profound humility. The apostle, barefoot and visibly uncomfortable, pulls back from his master's gesture, his body language speaking volumes about the reversal of hierarchies this moment represents. Behind them, the other disciples cluster in animated discussion, their faces registering shock and bewilderment at Christ's prophecy of betrayal. Van Baburen captures not merely a biblical narrative but a moment of human drama, where divine revelation meets earthly incomprehension.
The painter employs a restricted palette dominated by earth tones—ochres, umbers, and siennas—punctuated by the warm vermillion of Christ's garment. This chromatic restraint serves to focus attention on the play of light across forms rather than on decorative color. The background dissolves into near-blackness, a void from which the figures emerge as if summoned by light itself. This selective illumination creates a hierarchy of visual importance: those nearest the picture plane receive the strongest light, while figures recede into graduated shadow.
Van Baburen's brushwork reveals his Dutch training tempered by Roman experience. The handling is confident yet controlled, building form through careful modulation of tone rather than linear definition. Fabric textures are suggested rather than meticulously described, allowing the eye to move freely across the surface. The flesh tones, particularly in the highlighted areas, possess a luminous quality that speaks to his understanding of how light models form.
The composition pivots on the diagonal created by Christ's kneeling figure and Peter's recoiling form. This central axis is reinforced by the positioning of the other apostles, who form two distinct groups flanking the principal action. The arrangement draws the eye in a circular motion, from the illuminated figures on the left, through the central drama, to the shadowed forms on the right. This compositional strategy, learned from Caravaggio's Roman chapels, transforms a crowded scene into a legible narrative.
Van Baburen's Roman sojourn profoundly shaped his artistic vision. The influence of Caravaggio's Contarelli Chapel compositions is unmistakable, particularly in the grouping of figures emerging from darkness into raking light. Yet this is no mere imitation. The Utrecht painter brings his own sensibility to the Caravaggesque idiom, tempering its sometimes harsh contrasts with a more nuanced approach to modeling. The result speaks to the fertile exchange between North and South, between Protestant restraint and Catholic drama, that characterized the Utrecht Caravaggisti's brief but influential moment in art history.
