Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 21.7 × 17 in print therefore arrives as 24.1 × 19.4 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 51.2 × 40.1 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Watteau's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 55.2 × 43.2 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Full size guide.

About the Painting

In "Mezzetin," Jean Antoine Watteau creates a scene that feels as if it’s suspended between fantasy and reality. The central figure, Mezzetin, dressed in the striped costume of the commedia dell’arte, is caught mid-performance - or perhaps mid-pause. His pose, slightly slouched, guitar held loosely in hand, suggests a wistful daydream rather than the energetic antics his character usually embodies. Watteau captures this sense of ambivalence with remarkable subtlety, as if Mezzetin is both actor and spectator in his own play of unrequited love.

The setting is quintessential Watteau: a lush, overgrown garden, bathed in a soft, diffused light that blurs the line between nature and the imagined. The palette is restrained yet nuanced - gentle greens and shadowed blues intertwine with the pale pinks and silvery whites of Mezzetin’s costume. Watteau’s use of color creates a harmony between the figure and his environment, making Mezzetin appear as though he belongs as much to the landscape as to the theater. The distant female statue, turning her back on him, adds a quiet layer of melancholy, an allusion to the unattainable, to love lost or never returned.

Watteau’s handling of paint is delicate, almost intimate. The fine detailing of Mezzetin’s ruffled collar, his shimmering breeches, and the folds of his cape speak to the artist’s deep interest in texture and light. Yet, for all its precision, there is a lightness to Watteau’s touch that makes the painting feel spontaneous, as if this moment could evaporate at any second. The composition, with Mezzetin placed slightly off-center, invites the viewer to feel as though they have stumbled upon this private scene, where comedy, romance, and solitude intertwine.

This painting, like much of Watteau’s work, is more than it seems at first glance. It’s a portrait of a character, yes, but also a reflection on human emotion - the spaces between longing and performance, between what is said and what is left unsung. Watteau invites us to linger in that space, to listen to the silence between the notes of Mezzetin’s forgotten serenade.
