About the Painting

Cobalt and ultramarine saturate the September sky above Arles, each star encircled by its own radiating corona of cadmium yellow. Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night over the Rhône, 1888 presents a nocturnal vision where artificial and celestial light compete for dominance across the canvas. Below, two figures—perhaps lovers—anchor themselves against the foreground's ochre embankment while the Rhône flows past in diagonal sweeps of Prussian blue, each brushstroke pulling leftward as if caught by an unseen current.
Gas lamps punctuate the far shore. Orange flames from the town's illumination create vertical columns in the water, their reflections more solid somehow than their sources. Van Gogh has built these reflections with thick, assured strokes of chrome yellow and vermillion, applying the paint with such density that one can almost feel the weight of light on water.
