Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 15.2 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 17.6 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 29 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Titian's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 100.6 × 142.2 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in National Gallery, London, UK. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Let’s begin with the context. Picture Venice in the early 1530s: Titian has already secured his status as a painter who can fuse spiritual aura with a very worldly eye. By the time he’s working on what we’ve come to know as the "Aldobrandini Madonna," he’s ventured beyond merely telling a neat biblical story. Here, he chooses not to pin down a precise narrative moment but instead to flirt with multiple layers of meaning. It’s a painting destined for private devotion, a moment suspended in time where various references to Christ’s infancy gather, as if invited to a quiet, timeless assembly.

In compositional terms, Titian arranges the scene in a gentle, circling motion. On one side, we find the Virgin, cloaked in a rich, rather unconventional blue without the usual red to offset it. Opposite her, a kneeling woman carefully supports the Christ Child, and closer to the viewer, John the Baptist – identified by his familiar camel-skin tunic and that telltale reed cross – offers fruit and flowers. Our gaze is carried around the group before drifting out to notice shepherds in a hazy distance and an angel hovering aloft, adding an ethereal note. Instead of demanding a single, sharp focus, the composition encourages the eye to move at leisure, discovering layered intimacies rather than one dominant point.

Now step nearer and observe the brushwork. Rather than crisp contours, forms emerge as if breathed onto the canvas. The painting’s flesh tones shift gently, highlighting Titian’s knack for subtlety rather than bravado. Edges blur slightly, blending background and figure, sky and landscape, so that nothing jars the viewer’s sight. Titian’s painterly approach here speaks of a mature hand, someone comfortable with leaving narrative clues rather than fixing them firmly in place.

Color choices play a careful role. Rather than treating the Virgin as a stark iconic presence, he clothes her in a cool blue that harmonizes gently with the greenery and earth tones. By forgoing the more predictable red-and-blue pairing, Titian integrates the Virgin into the scene’s natural hush. The background’s subtle shifts in tone – soft blues in the distant hills, gentle greens and browns in the fields – create a lyrical interplay. No hue shouts for attention, yet each is felt, forming a visual chorus rather than a solo performance.

Ultimately, Titian bypasses the constraints of a strictly defined New Testament moment. He weaves together multiple hints – a nod to the Annunciation to the Shepherds, the presence of John the Baptist – to suggest a broad devotional tapestry rather than a locked-in narrative. This is painting as private reflection, a subtle invitation rather than a didactic sermon. It offers an atmosphere in which spiritual themes mingle with a world grounded in the luminous reality of Venetian color and gentle brushwork.
