Questions about this Print

The size you set is the printed image, the part you see once the canvas is stretched. Beyond that size we add 1.2 in of blank canvas on every side, at no extra cost, so the stretcher bars have something to grip. A 17.9 × 21.7 in print therefore arrives as 20.3 × 24 in. Both numbers are shown in Your Selection above and change with the slider.

Yes. The slider covers every size up to 34.2 × 41.3 in, always in the proportions of the original. If you need something larger, or a size that has to fit a frame you already own, write to us with the title and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible. Every print is made to order, so there is usually a way.

Because the original is an oil painting on canvas. We match the print medium to the original: oil paintings go on canvas, works on paper go on fine art paper. Our canvas is natural cotton, 400 g/m² Canvas, acid-free and pH neutral, and its woven texture gives the most natural impression of Alfred Sisley's original oil painting. The finish is satin/gloss, which keeps the depth of the dark tones the way varnish does on a painting in a museum; a matte canvas looks dull and pale next to it. More about our print media.

Start with the original, which measures 60 × 73 cm. A print at or near that size reads the way the artist judged it. Printing smaller is easy; enlarging a small original changes its character. For the wall, above a sofa or a sideboard aim for two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and hang the center at eye level. Cut paper to size and tape it to the wall before you order. The original hangs in Fuji Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan. Full size guide.

About the Painting

Oh, look at this! Sisley’s "Cows in Pasture, Louveciennes, 1874" is like stepping into the most serene part of the French countryside - the sort of place you wish you could escape to on a sunny afternoon. But don’t be fooled by its calm demeanor; there’s much more at play here than just a pastoral scene with a couple of lazy cows.

Alfred Sisley, always the quiet achiever of the Impressionists, doesn’t shout for attention like some of his contemporaries (I’m looking at you, Monet). Instead, he seduces us with a whisper, using light and shadow to pull us in. His brushwork is delicate, bordering on invisible, blending nature’s elements so seamlessly that the sky, trees, and cows seem to breathe together as one. And those cows! They’re not front and center as you’d expect - they’re modestly grazing off to the side, more interested in their lunch than in being part of some grand agricultural statement.

But then, there’s that curving path, cutting through the composition with all the subtlety of a lingering thought, guiding your eyes deeper into the landscape. It’s Sisley at his best - gently steering the viewer without them even realizing it. He’s showing you how to appreciate the everyday, the unspectacular, and, dare I say, the ordinary - all transformed into something quietly magical under his gaze.

The colors, too, are a marvel of restraint. Soft greens and earthy tones are broken up by the sky’s billowing clouds, which are full of life and light, reminding you that nature is never really still, even when the cows are. This is Sisley’s way - he’s not trying to paint a perfect world, but one that’s beautifully flawed, in constant motion, and utterly real.
