Painting Information

In this painting, Renoir depicts his good friend, the comrade in creative struggles, the young leader of the Impressionist group. He enchants our gaze with the beautiful summer, which is still sinking into autumn, still in its lush colourfulness. His friend almost blends in with the vegetation of the garden. He paints the house that is visible behind the flowers and bushes. The sun is not shining brightly; the sky, the vegetation, and the house are covered with lights, and yet the gold of summer radiates from the whole picture, the coloured patches of the flowers shining, which, though unmarked, reflect with fresh and rich tones the trodden and desolate grass around the workplace. The grey roofs of the houses on the right, their dirty facades also radiate the quiet glow of summer. There is hardly a brightly drawn line, even the slats of the fence and the legs of the easel are repeatedly crossed by patches of colour falling on them, and with it the air that envelops everything in nature.
